Behaviour Case Study
Paige Britton is an thirteen years old Ontario public school student
who has been recently diagnosed with behavioural issues. Paige has oppositional
defiant disorder. She lacks attention skills and disrupts the learning of
others in the classroom. When asked to complete her work in class she refuses
and becomes quite verbal and violent, as she seems not to like teachers telling
her what to do. When Paige gets defiant, she becomes a danger to
herself and others. We have a room set up for when she exhibits these
behavours but we would like for her to work through these behaviours and not
have need to go to the room. Paige has had to be restrained a few
times because of her violent tendencies. The school team and teacher
would like for Paige to undergo further psychiatric testing as they think
working with a therapist might help Paige with her anger issues.
She tends to take home her unfinished work but it cannot be marked
as an assessment because it is unclear if the parent or child is completing the
work and to be fair it cannot be marked. When frustration is elevated she needs
to go for a walk to elevate the frustration and is missing many key lessons.
The missed class lessons coupled with the incomplete work Paige's marks are
declining.
The Special Education team and teacher are hoping to come up with
some problem solving skills that Paige can use to help elevate the violence and
frustration when asked to do work and encourage Paige to be more productive in
class. The parents are open for discussions as they see this behaviour at home.
